The RRDGA's 18-hole tournament, held this year at Rock River Country Club in Rock Falls, will now lead off the 2007 women's tourney schedule on June 14. Also being added to the competition is the Women's State Amateur, held June 19-22 in Decatur this year.
The other tournaments that count toward the women's standings are: the Ballard on June 16-17; the Women's City July 30-Aug. 2; the 36-hole RRDGA tourney Aug. 16-17 and the Gold Medal Classic on Sept. 8-9.
However, the RRDGA events sport the two biggest fields (usually more than 100 golfers); boast some of the best champs (Women's City legends Salley Wessels and Kay Rossmiller have combined to win the 36-hole title more than 25 times); everyone has a club near them to join and RRDGA dues are a mere $5.
Also, while college and high school golfers can't compete in the Gold Medal, held after school begins, they can play in the RRDGA if they join the women's association at one of these 15 clubs: Atwood, Bel-Mar, Krueger-Haskell, Beloit Country Club, Dixon Country Club, Forest Hills Country Club, Ingersoll, Kishwaukee Country Club, Ledges, Mauh-Nah-Tee-See, Park Hills, Rockford Country Club, Rock River Country Club, Sandy Hollow and Timber Pointe.
The Ledges moved its Invitational ahead one week this year, (June 30-July 1) but that date now collides with the popular one-day SWANNI (June 30) at Krueger-Haskell in Beloit.
Hoey said he'd talk to Ledges officials and see if the two nearby tournaments could find different dates. The SWANNI is already accepting entries. The cost is $25 plus greens fees.
High school golfers know Park Hills West, site of many NIC-9, regional and sectional tournaments, but many adult Rockford golfers know little of this municipal gem.
