The Iowa men's gymnastics team finished fifth in Session I, with a score of 209.5 at an NCAA qualifier Thursday in University Park, Pa. The top three teams from each session advance to the NCAA team finals.
Jonathan Buese will compete in the all-around finals today after placing third overall with a score of 50.8. On pommel horse, Jacob Becker tied for second, scoring a 9.1. Geoff Reins led the Hawkeyes on floor exercise, posting a 9.5 to finish tied for third. On rings, Jacques Bouchard led Iowa, finishing fifth (9.55).
Allie Renberg, a 6-foot-1 post player for Iowa Lakes Community College, was named by the National Junior College Athletic Association to the women's Division II third-team all-American squad this week.
Simpson coach Ron Peterson has been appointed as vice president of the Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association for the next three years.
Peterson enters his 13th season at Simpson. He is the winningest coach at the school with a duals record of 192-97-2 (a .663 winning percentage).
New Iowa men's basketball coach Todd Lickliter and his wife, Joez, will be part of the American Cancer Society's Hoops for Hope fund-raising event at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona at 6 p.m. May 5.
Hoops for Hope is the first Coaches vs. Cancer event held in Iowa. Also featured will be Iowa State coach Greg McDermott and wife Theresa, Northern Iowa's Ben and Dawn Jacobson and Keno and Krista Davis from Drake.
