An organizational meeting for a local 14-and-under girls summer softball league is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at Wilber Bank on Main St. in Oneonta.

Teams from Cooperstown, Gilbertsville, Oneonta, Otego, Schenevus, Sidney, Walton and Worcester are planning to participate in the National Softball Association-sanctioned league, which is scheduled to run from July 1 to mid-August. Teams from Bainbridge, Franklin, Milford, Morris, Norwich, Sherburne and Unadilla have expressed interest in participating. All teams that wish to play this summer must attend the meeting.

Girls ages 11-14 are eligible to compete in the league, which will follow NSA rules, feature NSA-certified umpires and will culminate with an NSA-sanctioned 14-and-under tournament.

The Upper Susquehanna Pedalers and Paddlers Spring Race is scheduled for Saturday in Oneonta, rain or shine. Entrants must be present and registered before the pre-race meeting at 11 a.m.[an error occurred while processing this directive][an error occurred while processing this directive]All NYMCRA point classes, pro, recreation and recreation mixed are eligible to compete in the 12- and 18-mile events, which start at the Route 205 Bridge in Oneonta and finish at the Otego fishing access. Recreation, C-1W and youth class races end at the Otego fishing access. All other classes continue to Wells Bridge, turn at a buoy and return to the Otego fishing access.

USCA and NYMCRA rules apply. Coast Guard-approved life jackets (PFDS) must be in each boat and worn as designed at the discretion of the judges. Non-swimmers and youths must wear life jackets.

Pre-registration cost is $12 per amateur paddler and $15 per pro paddler. All pre-registrations must be received by mail before race day. Race-day registration costs $15 and $20, respectively.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the dates for New York’s spring turkey hunting seasons earlier this week.

The following day, the Baltimore Orioles will play an American League East Division rival _ the Toronto Blue Jays _ in the 2007 Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. The exhibition game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. May 21, two hours after the start of the annual Hall of Fame Game parade on Main Street. The two teams will have three representatives apiece in the annual Home Run Derby at 1 p.m. May 21.

The 2007 Northeastern New York Junior PGA is accepting registration for its championship tournament, which runs June 9-10 at the Western Turnpike Golf Course in Guilderland.

Winners of the boys and girls divisions will qualify for the Westfield Junior PGA Championship, set for July 11-14 at Westfield Group Country Club in Ohio.

The Westfield tournament is open to one boy and one girl champion from each of the 41 PGA sections, winners of select national junior tournaments conducted throughout the year and special invitees who have not reached their 19th birthdays or started college.

Community swimming lessons will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon in the Kunsela Hall pool. Classes include: American Red Cross levels I-VI, basic water rescue, infant/toddler/pre-schooler program and a Level VI diving class.
