Since it's gala opening in June 2004, the Ankeny Band Shell, affectionately known by citizens as the 'Shell, has become a "third place" icon for the community - bringing family, friends and neighbors together to enjoy everything from movies under the stars to high-energy music performances.

Rock in Prevention will host youth concert at the band shell. Kids of all ages are encouraged to attend the event, from 1 to 3 p.m. May 9. Pat McManus will entertain and educate through music, giveaways and prizes. Don't miss it!

Ankeny Unplugged is back this summer on three separate dates. Unplug from the weekly grind and chill outdoors with good music, favorite friends and adult beverages. The kickoff event on June 1 features a live music performance by The Black Diamond Band. Towncrier is back by popular demand on June 22 and Standing Hampton will rock the band shell on Aug. 3. The events run from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and there is a $2 cover charge.

Summer Sounds moves to Thursday's this summer. Enjoy the sweet sound of music for free on Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m. Be sure to bring your lawn chair or blanket. The schedule is: June 7, Faculty Lounge; June 14, High Society Big Band; June 28, Richie Lee and "Fabulous 50's"; July 19, The Starbusters; July 26, Ankeny Community Chorus and Band; Aug. 9, Paul Johnson.

Movies Under the Stars is a family event for warm summer Friday nights. Movies are free and begin at dusk. All movies are family-oriented and shown on a 14-by-20-foot screen. Bring lawn chair or a blanket. Movies planned are: June 8, "Superman Returns"; June 15, "Ghostbusters II"; June 29, "Polar Express"; July 20, "Batman Begins"; July 27, "Scooby Doo"; Aug. 10, "Open Season"; Aug. 17, "The Game of Their Lives."

If the band shell sounds like a fit for a special event, it is available for public rentals on a first-come, first-served reservation basis. It's an excellent place for small or large events, such as performances, wedding ceremonies, festivals and concerts. Please contact Ankeny Parks and Recreation at 963-3570 for rental information and use policies.

For more information about any of band shell activities or upcoming events, check the local paper, tune in to Ankeny cable channel 7 or go online at www.ci.ankeny.ia.us . Make the Ankeny band shell one of your summer destinations. See you there!
