During World War II, U. S. automobile manufacturers stopped producing passenger vehicles and retooled assembly plants so they could produce military vehicles. Why can't they do that now?
I understand there is a new military vehicle nicknamed Cougar that it technologically superior and safer than the current vehicles our troops are using in Iraq and Afghanistan. While American automobile manufacturers are experiencing a downturn in sales, couldn't this be a way to keep plants open and people employed, and show we support our troops?
In Newark, DaimlerChrysler is laying off workers because sales are down. Wouldn't it be beneficial all around if they manufactured the Cougar to save jobs and help bring troops home with fewer casualties?
In January, commander in chief George W. Bush ordered a surge of U.S. troops into Iraq to avoid defeat. After four years of his incompetent conduct of war, a majority of citizens no longer have the stomach for continuing Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Bush warned the Iraqi government that failure to meet benchmarks could mean a date for withdrawal of U.S. support. In March, the newly empowered congressional Democrats passed legislation providing money for the war, but attached a date certain for withdrawal starting in the summer of 2008. The president threatens to veto this legislation, claiming such policy encourages the enemy.
In the debate about the war, one fact does not go unnoticed by our enemies. A nation that has lost the will to fight a war will lose it. They see Democrats proving themselves incompetent to provide an alternative to the president's doctrine of war.
What alternative? Perhaps a doctrine of peace -- the rule of law as the guiding principle of U.S. policy. In the fog of war and partisan struggle over dates, with no plan for victory to end the age of terrorism peacefully, our enemy grows stronger as we grow weaker.
There have been a number of local and national cases in which children were neglected, or were physically and sexually abused. For nearly 30 years, Prevent Child Abuse Delaware has been educating children about personal safety and abuse.
We discuss the difference between good and bad secrets. Good secrets make them feel happy or excited. A bad secret is when someone is hurt. Safe adults should be told.
If your child discloses any type of abuse, remain calm and do not blame the child. Abuse is never a child's fault. Do not pressure a child to tell details. Call the Division of Family Services at (800) 292-9582 immediately to report abuse.
More than three decades ago, Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, promising every worker the right to a safe environment. Nonetheless, the toll of workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths remains enormous. Each year, thousands of workers are killed, injured or become ill because of hazards on their jobs.
The fight for safe jobs has gotten harder as the Bush administration, acting on behalf of corporate interests, has refused to address pressing problems. This administration has moved to weaken protections.
Dozens of important safety rules have been withdrawn. Voluntary compliance has been favored over issuing new standards and work site enforcement.
On April 28, the United Auto Workers along with other AFL-CIO unions observe Workers Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job and to renew the fight for safe workplaces.
Our country was founded on the idea of religious freedom. The separation of church and state guaranteed by the Constitution provides everyone the right to practice a religion of their choice, or not. It does not allow a church to make or determine the law.
Marriage is a legal and binding contract under the law. The ceremony may be performed by a government or religious official. Assuming that the parties to be married have not lied in order to obtain a marriage license, their marriage is recognized to be legal by the state. Whether or not a particular church recognizes a marriage is irrelevant to its legality.
For example, the Catholic church does not recognize divorce or the remarriage of someone who is divorced, but is legally powerless to prevent it.
American cities are suffering from an epidemic of senseless violence stemming from a general breakdown of social order. Following the shooting deaths of children, teenagers or innocent bystanders, rallies are frequently held calling for an end to violence and stepped-up police presence in troubled neighborhoods. The rally organizers need the cooperation of residents in these areas.
When violence strikes a neighborhood, the police are expected to be there to quell the mayhem. If a man with a knife commits a carjacking and leads police on a chase through the city, the police are supposed to stop him. If the man attempts to kill officers, the officers' choices become limited. A strong likelihood exists that the perpetrator will be stopped forcibly.
Lawsuits will result in a further breakdown of social order. More chaos and murder will ensue in cities when police choose not to intervene for fear of being sued.
A recent letter suggested that the cause of America's disastrous Middle East policy was support of Israel. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Israel is a steadfast ally in the war against terrorism.
Sunni-Shiite bloodshed in Iraq dates from events that occurred in the latter half of the 7th century -- over 1,300 years before Israel was established.
The Iran-Iraq war, Iraq's invasion of Kuwait which precipitated the first Persian Gulf war, Turkey's problems with radical Muslim elements seeking to overthrow its secular Muslim government and the persecution of Egypt's ancient Coptic Christian community are factors too.
Middle East strife cannot be viewed in a vacuum. It is part of a complex world campaign by the sworn enemies of democracy and freedom. Consider the Taliban's destruction of Buddhist statutes in Afghanistan, the destruction of Hindu shrines in India by radical Muslims and the horrors in Algeria where radicals have slaughtered over 100,000 moderate Muslims.
Our enemies do not hate America solely because it supports Israel. They hate America, and other western societies, including Israel, because we are a democracy. It is our way of life and the freedoms we cherish that they seek to destroy.
Many people consider Israel to be the front line in the battle to save western civilization. After 9/11, many believe that every democracy is on the "front line." Abandonment of Israel is not the solution. Rather than making our enemies disappear, it would embolden them.
State legislators are considering imposing a mandatory motorcycle helmet use law, after they failed to do anything meaningful about increasing penalties for right-of-way violations. This is equivalent to mandating that convenience store workers wear bulletproof vests, rather than penalize people who rob them at gunpoint.
Dictating that experienced adult riders can no longer decide when to wear helmets, which restrict peripheral awareness, is not the solution. What prevents motorcycle accidents most often is proper training. Imposing stiffer penalties on problem drivers would do a lot more to make roads safer for everyone.
Lawsuits against cops are the only thing the public can do against cops. It is a useful tool to fight police misconduct. Since apparently it is so hard to actually bring any fault or charges against cops and win. Police misconduct can refer to brutality, corruption or other objectionable actions like false arrest, intimidation, racial profiling, political repression, surveillance abuse and sexual abuse taken by police officers in connection with their official duties.
Lawsuits are simply a tool to be used for the public's defense against crooked cops. (I am sure every lawyer is licking their chops at my last sentence) Although I am not a fan of lawsuits, until some police departments in this nation learn to publically show that they are able to reform on their own or publically show that they are handling the current incident(whatever that may be) with certain public approval, lawsuits are the only answer, unfortunately.
