Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald, a seven-term Democratic House member from southern California, died late Saturday (April 21, 2007) of cancer. She was 68. Her chief of staff, Bandele McQueen, said she had been receiving hospice care. Mrs. Millender-McDonald had recently worked on issues including election reform and opposing the genocide in Sudan. She is survived by her husband, James McDonald Jr., and five adult children. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has 14 days to set a date for a special election to fill the seat.
The state Department of Correction held at least 14 inmates beyond their release dates, including one man who was kept in prison four years too long, the Boston Sunday Globe reported. The department in some cases failed to comply with a court order that modifies some sentences for time spent on parole, relied on an inadequate computer system that tracks sentences, or simply botched the math, it said.
The companies that grew, processed and marketed contaminated spinach that led to a nationwide E. coli outbreak last year reached undisclosed settlements in three deaths.
A jury has ordered two assailants to pay Billy Ray Johnson $9-million for a beating that left him brain damaged. Johnson, who is black, was attacked by four white men in 2003. The other assailants reached settlements in the civil case. The attackers were fined and sentenced to probation and jail time, but none served more than 60 days behind bars.
