For the cost of a dinner entree, you can get yourself to the middle of America's big celebration — the 400th birthday festival to be held in Jamestown, Va., in mid-May.
AirTran, the official airline of "America's 400th Anniversary," is offering $16.07 one-way tickets from Atlanta to Newport News/Williamsburg, Va., as part of the celebration.
AirTran is running a separate systemwide sale with one-way rates to Newport News at $79 valid on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays on trips finished on or before Nov. 7. Rates are $89 each way for Mondays, Thursdays or Friday trips. Regular rates apply for Sunday travel days. Give at least a two-week advance notice of travel. Some blackout dates apply: May 25, 28, 29; June 29-July 2 and July 7, 9 and Sept. 3. Buy tickets through May 8.
America's big celebration will be held May 11-13 at historic Anniversary Park in Jamestown. Five satellite stages will host performances every half hour (from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.) for three days.
The performance highlights on Friday, May 11, include the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra performing works written especially for the commemoration.
On Saturday, highlights include performances of rock, bluegrass (Ricky Skaggs), funk (Chaka Khan) and from three-time Grammy winner Bruce Hornsby & The NoiseMakers. The evening follows an afternoonlong program of "400 Minutes of Music," which includes contemporary rock, folk, world, blues, soul music and alternative country.
On Sunday the weekend concludes with a powerful performance of a 400-piece orchestra and a 1,607-voice choir created especially for the commemoration and representing most of the United States. A fireworks finale completes the evening.
This historic weekend event remembers the 108 English explorers who after a five-month voyage across the Atlantic settled on the coast of Virginia and established the colony of Jamestown on May 14, 1607.
