The Authors! Authors! series sponsored by The Blade and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library closes the season with television host and chef Daisy Martinezat at 7 p.m. May 8 at the Stranahan Great Hall, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. She familiarizes viewers with the food market and favorite ingredients of Latino kitchens, and teaching techniques passed down from her mother and grandmother. A short question and answer session follows her talk. Adult tickets are $10, and $8 for students from all library locations.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, the 1962 western starring Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles, and Lee Marvin, has been scheduled at 1 p.m. Thursday in Super Cinemas, 1301 East Mall Dr., Holland, as the latest entry in National Amusements' Silver Screen Classics program. John Ford's Oscar-winning film, often called a masterpiece, tells the tale of a senator (Stewart), who became famous for killing a notorious outlaw (Marvin). Returning for the funeral of an old friend (Wayne), he reveals that the story of his deed is not what it seems.
The price of $1 will buy viewers a ticket, popcorn, and a soft drink. The Silver Screen Classics program is geared toward senior citizens, but movie fans of all ages are welcome to attend.
Stomp will be staged May 11-13 at the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. The performers use found everyday items to make music and dance about the stage. Curtain times will be at 8 p.m. May 11, 5 and 9 p.m. May 12, and 2 and 7 p.m. May 13. Tickets range from $23 to $44 from the box office, 419-381-8851 or Ticketmaster, 419-474-1333.
The sixth annual Blame the Champagne Event benefiting the Toledo Opera will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. May 12 in the showroom of Ballas Buick GMC on the Central Ave. strip. The evening begins with a wine tasting and gourmet grazing buffet, dancing to a Motown theme, and live auctions. Tickets are $75 per person, or $150 with access to an open bar and reserved seating from 419-255-7464.
Also scheduled in the theatre is the Glenn Mill. The 19-member band continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements mixed with more modern selections in the big-band style. Adult tickets are $24, $22 for seniors, and $12 for students from 734- 242-7722.
Sweet Claudette & Friends Band are hosting a CD party for their new release "Live & Kickin' " at 9:30 p.m. May 5 at the Music Suite, 2218 Airport Hwy. The band won the preliminary round of the Detroit Blues Society Metropolitan Blues Challenge in Trenton, Mich. Those finals are in November.
Las Vegas metalcore giants Escape The Fate will be in concert May 10 at Gatorz on West Bancroft St. Fresh off the 2007 Epitaph Tour, the quintet's trek with Welsh hard rockers Bullet For My Valentine concludes its six week tour.
