The second annual "Steak & Song at STA" will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in the St. Thomas Aquinas School gym, 915 Alton Road, East Lansing.

The children's, youth and adult choirs of the parish will sing both secular and religious songs throughout the evening. Members of the Men of Orpheus and the Haslett Community Church Choir will also perform.

A steak dinner will be served. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door; a children's menu will be available for $5. Contact the STA church office at 351-7215 for tickets.

The Unity churches of the Lansing area - Unity of Greater Lansing, Spiritual Renaissance and Fellowship for Today - are hosting author Edwene Gaines from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the Unity of Greater Lansing Church, 240 Marshall St. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted.

Gaines' book, "The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity: A Simple Guide to Unlimited Abundance," outlines four principles to achieve prosperity. A lunch follows the event.

Divine Connection & JG Entertainment are presenting a "Tri-City Community Benefit Musical" at 6:30 p.m. today at the Prince of Peace Baptist Church, 3125 W. Miller Road.

The musical is being held to benefit families in need. The groups hope this will be a community affair, with all races and different denominations coming together to help those in need. There will be many musical talents, including choirs, soloists, praise dancers and groups.

A Bible study begins at 11 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch at noon, and a program, "Friends Under God's Wing," at 1 p.m. There is no charge. Info: 694-1279 or 487-2826.

St. Luke Lutheran Church in Haslett invites the community to participate in National Prayer Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the outdoor chapel of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Praying may be done aloud or silently, and prayer guides will be available. The outdoor worship facility is located toward the back of St. Luke's property, overlooking a natural wetland area. The church is at 5589 Van Atta Road, Haslett. The event will be moved inside if the weather is inclement.

Church pastor the Rev. David Dressel will be recognized for achieving the Aeterna Moliri (Builder for Eternity) award. He was selected by the faculty at Concordia University in St. Paul and will be honored at that school's commencement ceremony May 11. The award celebrates his work in campus ministry, his service as president of the Lutheran Campus Mission Association and service to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod English District. A reception follows the 10:30 a.m. service.

Martin Luther Chapel also will commission 10 people as Stephen Ministers during the 10:30 a.m. service. The five college students and five community residents have undergone 50 hours of training to help them provide assistance to people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. Those to be commissioned include: Matthew Anderson, Chris Bickel, Krista Buckland, John Engle, Melody Frye, Alena Krone, Katie Morabito, Kristy Peterson, Judi Stroemer and Janette Walker.

The Greater Lansing Area Community of Faith Chorus will present "Redeemed," arranged by Mike Speck, at three locations over the next several weeks. This is an up tempo musical worship program featuring contemporary arrangements of gospel songs and well-known hymns.

The programs are at 6 p.m. with a goodwill offering taken to support the chorus. Dates and places are: Sunday at Lakeside Chapel at Park Lake (Park Lake and Webster roads, Bath); May 6 at Williamston Free Methodist Church (4400 N. Williamston Road); and May 20 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church (at Mt. Hope Road and Cedar Street).

The chorus, composed of more than 50 singers from a dozen Lansing-area churches, is in its ninth season. Directors are Marcy Morgan of Lansing and Diana Smith of Williamston. For information contact Morgan at 882-5219 or Smith at 655-4114.

Clyde Rivers Jr., Commissioner for Africa of the Latin University of Theology in Torrance, Calif., will be in Lansing May 5 to confer an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Divinity, to Apostle Brent Hale, Senior Pastor of World Harvest Outreach Church. Two other Michigan pastors, Apostle Ron James of Grand Haven, and Apostle Kenneth Bolton of Southfield, also will receive the degree.

An honorary doctorate is a degree conferred on those who have made exceptional achievements in the world. For more than 10 years, Hale has made numerous trips to several nations in Africa preaching, teaching and working. Hale is also a co-founder of Touch A Nation International Missions. The group has equipped and ordained more than 150 pastors in Uganda. Hale also founded and established World Harvest Outreach Church and has been in ministry in Lansing for the past 20 years.
