"It's been a boom for the dancing industry and has helped to change our image," said Dunn, 42, who bought Shall We Dance, a Witchduck Road studio, last year.
Dunn's love of dance dates to his high school years in California. He began ballet, jazz and modern dance lessons as a teenager, and began instructing a dance team during his senior year. He won many titles, as did his students.
An eight-year stint in the Navy as an electronics technician took Dunn to many places, but dance always remained a part of his life. In 1994, he completed his service and moved to Virginia.
"I enjoy helping people have a better life, and I get to spend my day with happy people because they are always happy during their dance lessons," he said.
Ten instructors help Dunn teach salsa, tango, swing, West Coast swing, the hustle, zumba, African and Latin dances. Beginner, intermediate and advanced-level classes are offered, as well as dance parties, adult and children 's groups, couples, private and semi-private lessons.
"I needed a low-impact exercise, and it has become an addiction," she said. "I always danced, but I wanted to learn how to dance properly. All you need is a nice pair of dance shoes. "
